The Heat Equation The Heat
formed in the hot summer of 2003 in order to perform at the Post Clarence
Park Festival Party. Ryan had just completed his degree in music at Derby
University and moved back to Wakefield. Unbeknownst to
him, his mum, a music journalist, had "spotted" Antonio at an open mic
night in O`Donoghues Bar in Wakefield, and, seeing the potential,
introduced the pair and set up a "jam". The rest is
history as they discovered shared musical tastes, became great friends and
hastily put a set together for the Clarence gig.The audience response was
amazing, and The Heat was on. Word spread and they were
showcased at various venues, including The New Roscoe, Leeds, The Cockpit
and The Snooty Fox in Wakefield, all to a tremendous response.
In December 2003 they were invited to play at an Industry Showcase
at The Snooty Fox, picked as one of the best acts to have appeared there
over the previous year. To promote the showcase, they were invited to
perform a live session on BBC Radio, on The Raw talent Show. Presenter
Alan Raw was (quote) "gobsmacked" by The Heat, and later invited them to
perform at the BBC Christmas Party at The Wellington in Hull.
Meanwhile, back at the showcase, a Sony Records scout described the duo as
"one of the best he'd seen" but felt it was early days. Certainly they
have been hiding their light under various bushels, marking time until
they finish their Uni courses in June,so live gigs have had to be
restricted, but they have been beavering away feverishly in the dead of
night writing an albumful of new material, ready to hit the studio in June
2004. Despite their low profile, their reputation
steadily grew and in January top Leeds promoter John Keenan invited The
Heat to support touring American soul singer Barrence Whitfield at The New
Roscoe, describing them on the poster as "exciting young acoustic blues
maestros". Sadly the tour was postponed but Dr Blue (with whom Ryan also
plays harmonica) stood in and a brilliant night was had by all. Things are
now starting to hot up, and London Kiss FM DJ BAM BAM has requested a copy
of The Heat's "Bam Bam Blues"!! More about that as it develops.
The Heat have made some good friends along the way, especially other
performers with whom they`ve shared a stage, including Gary Stewart, Jess
Gardham and Mofo, and no doubt will be meeting up for more gigs
together.Their self produced debut CD "Bam Bam Blues" has been selling
well at gigs and will be available to buy online.2004 is looking good for
The Heat, with several big festivals and cracking good gigs in the
pipeline. See gig guide for details.
